Thematic blocks of the conference
Natural disasters
Natural disasters
The frequency and intensity of natural disasters is increasing due to advancing climate change. The floods of September 2024, not only caused countless material damage in large parts of the Lower Silesian and Opole Voivodeships, but also left a powerful mark on the psyche of hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of these regions, who - in addition to losing their possessions - also lost their sense of security. The Great Water has given rise to a revision of the approach to psychological interventions in the face of the fight against the elements, also in the context of support for aid workers. Speeches will address the topics of helping people after experiencing natural disasters or the biological mechanisms of memory and non-remembrance of experienced events.
Domestic violence
Domestic violence
Domestic violence is a major challenge for the social support system and aid workers, which requires an interdisciplinary approach due to its complexity. Alongside social and legal support, psychological support is the cornerstone of effective intervention against domestic violence and also plays a key role in addressing its psychological consequences - post-traumatic stress symptoms, emotional and anxiety disorders, feelings of helplessness - which, despite the cessation of violence, are often still felt for many years. Speakers will address the topics of trauma in children experiencing domestic violence or the impact of traumatic experiences and domestic violence on academic achievement.
Armed conflicts
Armed conflicts
Although quite a few of today's conflicts take on the dimensions of information or economic warfare, conventional clashes still occur in some parts of the world. The most glaring example is the war taking place across our eastern border in Ukraine, in which soldiers and civilians are dying every day. The survivors need extensive support, which cannot only take the form of material support. And here it is essential to implement well-considered psychological interventions in order to minimise the effects of the traumatic experience of war and to support the victims in their return to psychological balance.
